To get the most out of Silverfish, we recommend:
- Windows 2000 Pro (SP1)
- Internet Information Server 5
- Pentium 600 with 256MB RAM
- 24-bit colour
At the very least, you'll need the following minimum systems requirements:
- Windows 98, Windows 2000 Pro (SP1) or NT Workstation 4 (SP6)
- Personal Web Server or Internet Information Server 4 (or above)
- Pentium 200 with 64MB RAM
- 1024 x 768 resolution

Browser requirements
Sites created in Silverfish require one of the following:
- Internet Explorer 5 or above
- Netscape 4.75 or above, or Opera 5 or above (but Internet Explorer is still required for the Silverfish modeller to run).
Installation directory
The installation package directory contains the following objects:
- DemoSites directory
- Help directory
- silverfish_98_v1 directory
- silverfish_NT_v1 directory
- autorun.inf
- Install.exe
- knownissues.txt
- Readme.txt
- Readme.htm
Installing Silverfish
-
To begin installation, simply double-click the Install.exe file. (This brings up a
dialog that is used in checking the system before allowing the actual installation to go ahead.)
-
Click the System Check button to proceed.
-
If all tests are passed, the Install button will be enabled. Click this button to install
the application.
If the system uses any version of Windows other than Windows 2000, the HTML help system must be
updated. Once this update is complete, the Silverfish application installation will be started.
The installer first checks that an appropriate version of Windows Installer is installed on the
computer. If not, an appropriate version will be installed. This will require that you restart
the computer before continuing with the installation. If the installation of Silverfish does
not continue automatically, simply navigate to the Silverfish installation directory and
double-click SilverfishInstall.exe.
On computers that have Internet Information Services installed, there will be no manual steps.
Once installation is complete, simply restart the computer and the software is ready to run.
If Personal Web Server is installed, two virtual directories will have to be manually added.
Instructions are given during installation and also included in a Readme.txt file in the
C:\irRoot directory. Once these have been added and the computer has been rebooted, the
software will be ready to run (the virtual directories need not be added before rebooting,
only before running the software).
NOTE: An error message may occur during install that reads "Failed to install service".
This is not really a failure. It simply means the MySQL service is already installed.
If you get a message stating that your computer does not meet the minimum screen resolution
requirement, make sure that the screen resolution is at least 1024x768. Once the screen
resolution is set, run the installer again.
There is a default application user for the Silverfish modeller:
Username: root

Silverfish Installation preconditions
The following are checked before installation can proceed:
Check for the presence of Silverfish software
Silverfish installation requires that no pre-existing copies of Silverfish be installed.
If Silverfish is already installed, please uninstall it before proceeding.
Check for Internet Explorer (version 5 .0 or later)
Silverfish installation requires that Microsoft Internet Explorer
(version 5.0 or later) be installed. If Internet Explorer is not
installed, it can be download from www.microsoft.com.
Check for Winsock.dll version
Silverfish installation requires that the version of the Winsock.dll file
(found in the system directory) be 2.2 or later.
This should be the case by default if the system is one other than Windows 95.
If an appropriate version of Winsock.dll is not present, one can be download
from www.microsoft.com. (The link to download Winsock.dll, including all information
pertaining to the download, is currently
http:// www.microsoft.com/ Windows95/ downloads/ contents/ WUAdminTools/ S_WUNetworkingTools/ W95Sockets2/ Default.asp.)
Check for the presence of TCP/IP
Silverfish installation requires that TCP/IP be installed.
Instructions for installing TCP/IP are included in the Windows help system.
Check for the presence of MySQL
Silverfish installation requires that no local copy of MySQL exists. This is a
precaution to ensure that any existing settings and data are not overwritten.
If MySQL is installed, please back these up to another computer/device before uninstalling MySQL.
The details of this check are as follows:
- Check for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ AppPaths\ mysqld.exe key.
- If it exists, check for mysqld*.exe in that path.
- Check for C:\mysql directory. If it exists, check for mysqld*.exe in that path.
- Check for C:\my.cnf. If it exists, MySQL is assumed to be installed.
- If all three of the above fail, check all local hard drives for any copies of mysqld*.exe.
Database checks
Silverfish installation requires that the operating system ODBC driver manager be installed and
that there is no existing copy of the Silverfish database alias, "silverfishdb". This is a
precaution to ensure that existing information within this database is not overwritten.
If the ODBC driver manager is not installed, it is likely that Personal Web Server or Internet
Information Services is not installed. The ODBC driver can be installed with one of these
(see help on PWS and IIS), or separately, from the Windows installation CD.
If a database with the "silverfishdb" alias exists, please rename the database and backup the
actual database files before proceeding with the installation process.
Check for Personal Web Server(PWS) or Internet Information Services(IIS)
Silverfish installation requires that either Personal Web Server (PWS) or Internet Information Services
(IIS) be installed.
If neither Web server is present, the installation will not proceed.
To install PWS or IIS:
-
Windows 2000: Open Control Panel, launch Add/Remove Programs and select the
Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left. The second option from the top
should be Internet Information Services (IIS). Select the checkbox for
that option and click OK to install IIS.
-
Windows 98: Open Control Panel, launch Add/Remove Programs and select the
Windows Components tab. Internet Tools is presented as an option. Select it,
click OK to install and run the following instruction from the command line or
by selecting Run from the start menu:
x:\add-ons\pws\setup.exe
(x being the drive where Windows installation files reside, usually the CD-Rom)
Once the installation is complete the precondition should be met.
-
Windows NT 4.0: At least service pack 4 (6a is recommended), or go to www.microsoft.com.
The link to the download is http:// www.microsoft.com/ NTWorkstation/ downloads/ Recommended/ ServicePacks/
NT4OptPk/ Default.asp) and download the NT 4.0 Option Pack.
If the problem is one of PWS or IIS version number, obtain an update from www.microsoft.com.
Uninstalling Silverfish
There are 2 ways to uninstall Silverfish:
-
Open Start Menu => Programs => Southeaster and select Uninstall Silverfish.
-
On Control Panel, launch Add/Remove Programs, select Silverfish and click Remove.
For Personal Web Server under Windows 98, manually remove the virtual directories
(the procedure is the same as creation, except select the directory and click Remove).
Please note: the logs for Silverfish and mySQL will not be deleted during uninstall.
The registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Southeaster\ Version1 will also remain after uninstallation.
